Yen 4-koma, Takahashi talks, Thorn translates

MangaBlog | 1 hour ago

Check out this week’s PWCW, where I talk to Kurt Hassler of Yen Press about that company’s recent 4-koma binge, and I also interview Charlie “Spike” Trotman about her webcomic Templar, Arizona. It’s not manga, but very cool anyway. Also very interesting is Laura Hudson’s look at the digital comics landscape. I got an iPod Touch this weekend—they threw it in for free with the MacBook we bought for our daughter—so I’ll finally be checking out that particular corner of the [...]

PR: Takehiko Inoue titles from Viz

MangaBlog | 1 hour ago

I picked up Real at the comics shop last week, and it looks great—and this is coming from someone so sports-impaired that I was standing on a baseball diamond last week and had to ask someone which was third base. Anyway, Viz is going long on Takehiko Inoue; check out the assortment of manga and art books that are coming our way. VIZ MEDIA ANNOUNCES THE DEBUT OF NEW WORKS FROM FAMED MANGA ARTIST TAKEHIKO INOUE INCLUDING SLAM DUNK and REAL [...]

Dave McKean wows Edinburgh Book Festival

Forbidden Planet Blog | 1 hour ago

“‘T’was a dark and stormy night, The rain the heaviest I’d seen, And yet in their dozens they came, To see Mister Dave McKean. He gave us all visuals to delight And soon we forgot the wet, chilly night.” Apologies, I’ve been looking over some old William McGonagle poetry again, I should know better at my age… But it was indeed a dark and stormy night, more like October than August, our unpredictable weather switching sudden deluges on and off like [...]

“That new Kramers Ergot looks sort of interesting, but I bet it’s no Toupydoops.” - Dick Hyacinth   Above the Fold [Top Story] Gerry Alanguilan sounds the warning bell on a proposed censorship law in the Philippines: “As an artist, this is a bill that gravely concerns me because it has the potential to seriously curtail not only my freedoms as an artist, but my the ability to make my own choices as a mature, intelligent and moral human being.” [...]

Wimsey Wednesday - 26. The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club, part one

Zarjaz Journal | 3 hours ago

The fourth of Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey novels is 1928's The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club and concerns the deaths of an elderly veteran and, separately, his estranged sister on the tenth anniversary of the World War One Armistice. It's a terrific book, and I'm certain that anybody who came to it without the odd circumstances of my first reading would enjoy it even more than I do. You see, in the early 1990s, when I first started reading Sayers, I [...]

12,000 To 1

Fortress Of Fortitude | 5 hours ago

Frederic Wertham and Estes Kefauver tried their best to get lurid comics out of the hands of children and into the garbage bin, but the medium still managed to limp along until it found its second wind with DC’s - and ultimately, Marvel’s - rediscovery of super-heroes. Even a publisher like Harvey, which published some of the wildest horror dcomics out there, stayed afloat with kids comics and a few neutered “thriller” titles. Alarming Tales #5 was one such title, [...]

Paris

Read About Comics | Aug 19, 2008 09:26PM

Written by Andi WatsonArt by Simon Gage144 pages, black and whitePublished by SLG Publishing For someone who loves most of Andi Watson’s creations, I really have no idea why it’s taken me this long to finally read Paris. It’s been a strange sort of blind spot amidst books like Breakfast After Noon, Slow News Day, or Glister. And now that I’ve read it? I must admit that it wasn’t at all what I was expecting from Watson. Juliet is an American [...]

Jews and American Comics

Comic Pants | Aug 19, 2008 09:26PM

Editor: Paul Buhle Artists: Many and varied Company: The New Press Even the most cursory investigation of the history of American comic books reveals the widespread influence of Jewish creators and businessmen. I’m not overstating things by saying that Jews built comics as we know them today. I’m aware of the major names in that history from past reading, but I’ve never come across a book that focused solely on that Jewish aspect before, so when the publisher sent me this, [...]

100 Bullets #94- A Reason to Keep Reading Comics

Comics Fairplay | Aug 19, 2008 07:44PM

I just got home and my DCBS order was waiting for me. Jim had pulled out the pile of books, and I immediately ran to my stack and pulled out 100 Bullets. I sank down on the couch and read issue #94.All I can say is "wow".The series is set to end with issue 100, so the writer Brian Azzarello and artist Eduardo Risso have started to reveal bits and pieces. There is a meet up with three old dogs and [...]

Marvel Comics I Liked: Twelve, Iron Man, Mary Jane

Comics Worth Reading | Aug 19, 2008 07:25PM

I read some Marvel comics this week I enjoyed (even though they came out a week before). Here’s some quick thoughts on them. The Twelve #7 — I’m still enjoying this saga of 40s heroes brought into the modern era. The blend of culture clash and dark secrets becoming known keeps me interested. I hope that all the hints pay off satisfactorily, but in the meantime, I like the characters, especially the reporter narrator who’s trying to keep practicing his profession. [...]

Why Bands Are Better Than Comic Creators

Kleefeld on Comics | Aug 19, 2008 06:46PM

My band members and I were sitting around after rehearsal the other night, talking about various issues, and one of the things that came up is that we've got a pretty good mix of talent to become a successful area band. Oh, sure, there's musical talent in the group, but that's not what makes a band successful. It's only rock-n-roll, after all, and a huge chunk of songs are simple chord progressions that any moderately talented 14-year-old good pull off. No, [...]

Comic Artist’s Photo Reference: Women and Girls

Comics Worth Reading | Aug 19, 2008 06:44PM

This reference book, second in a series, focuses on only one gender, but never fear: the Men and Boys volume is coming later this year. Comic Artist’s Photo Reference:Women and GirlsBuy this book And really, given the usual audience for “how to make comics” books, starting with pictures of women makes sense. The promotional material makes clear that they’re aiming at aspiring creators of action comics (promising “superhero poses”), and many of those are male, so they can use themselves as [...]

Detached

Comics Worth Reading | Aug 19, 2008 06:44PM

James Burns sent me a link to his webcomic Detached, and I liked reading it. It’s about how he was diagnosed and treated for a detached retina. As an artist, the possibility of losing his eyesight was horrific to him, a fear I can definitely relate to. I was intrigued by his story, all the more so because it was true. A comic is a perfect choice to tell the tale, because he can draw what he saw during the ailment [...]

Kirkman/Kochalka/Bianchi

London Loves Comics | Aug 19, 2008 05:44PM

Good evening chums, much to discuss! What about that Robert Kirkman eh? Blimey! Jacks in Marvel, gets a seat on Image's top table and suddenly he's telling anyone taking their shilling off the big two to pack it in and concentrate on creator owned projects. He also wants DC and Marvel to cut out the disembowelment, evisceration, swearing and sex and concentrate on making comics for kids! Woah, radical stuff. If you haven't heard what he's got to say, then you [...]
