…or at least that’s what Kate Beaton would have us believe. Now that both Canada Day and The 4th of July are behind us, Kate takes a break from her own delightful historical (and sometimes not-so-historical) comics to share some great old political cartoons detailing early Canada/U.S. relations. Previously: Kate Beaton.
Zing! I’m loving these scans of old comic book sound effects on Flickr: Retronomatopoeia. (via Amy Crehore)
I didn't know that there had been a Swamp Thing animated show. It only lasted 5 episodes though. Swamp Thing aired on FOX, so it makes sense it was cancelled. Maybe if they hadn't changed the lyrics of "Wild Thing" it would have been more popular. heh heh-Swinebread

Here's how this works: I finish reading something, and I tell you about it, and I try not to bore you to death. Today: reviews of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Omnibus Volume One (Dark Horse, 2007) and Popeye Volume One (Fantagraphics, 2006).I felt like giving this a try, since the Hipster Kids and I have been watching the first season of this series. Dark Horse has been publishing Buffy tie-in and spin-off comics from a number of creative teams for around [...]
It was my first year in college, attending the first of five years studying architecture at the University of Sto. Tomas. When I decided to acquiesce to my parents request that I pursue architecture rather than fine arts, I started to prepare myself for a life long career as an architect. As a plan, it wasn’t so bad. Nothing really short of Armageddon could have changed the course of life that I had already laid down for myself. Armageddon, or as [...]
One of the best comics going around at the moment is Wolverine First Class. It is a telling of how the close relationship that Kitty and Logan have evolved, from Kitty’s first days at the Xavier School. It’s funny, it’s cute, and above all, it gives you the insight in to their relationship it promises. However SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Review: Wolverine First Class #4", url: "http://www.majorspoilers.com/archives/4475.htm/" });
"You've NEVER read a Spidey story like P.O.V3!" So proclaimed the cover of this week's Amazing Spider-Man. I hate to complain about the book because even though I loathed the way they got here, I have been enjoying the new status quo - but this issue was just a damp squib.The problem is that I have seen it before. I've seen the 'different points of view of the same event' thing done on everything from E.R. to Star Trek: The Next [...]
I declare July 5 to be "Independents Day" for the celebration of independent comics. I celebrated by reading something I've been dreading for a long time: Invincible.I first heard of Invincible from the collectors set of the Heroclix they put with him and his cast. Since they, I'd heard a lot about how good it was, and that was what had me so frightened. Let me not fall in love with another universe to follow!Well, I picked up issue 50, and [...]
We continue our presentation of Meneerke Peeters strips. For more info, see yesterday’s post. (All artwork © the estate of Joë Meulepas) “…Four years…” “Watchmaker”
On January 7, 1957, a new strip was published in the Flemish newspaper De Standaard. It featured a somewhat strange little guy, blessed with an enormous, bolbous nose and wearing a white labcoat. Meneerke Peeters, as he was called, was the creation of Flemisch cartoonist Joë Meulepas (or Pil, as he liked to sign his work). Even though Meneerke Peeters was an everyman in many ways, Pil tended to steer his hero into situations that were fairly bizarre, absurd and [...]
It's tonight. Pull on your Dalek slippers. Get the Doctor Who chocolate from the fridge. Take the phone off the hook because, believe it or not, there may be some people not watching it. And enjoy.65 minutes of new "New Who" and we will know what the current season has been building up to. Russell T Davies episodes tend to be the Chinese takeaway of Doctor Who stories, brilliant at the time but leaving you with a hollow feeling a few [...]
Thunderbirds. Stingray. The Avengers. Doctor Who. Apart from being all top notch TV programs what else do these icons of the 60s and 70s have in common? Simple - they all appeared in comic strips of one description or another. Of course, there are many more out there. (cover of TV21 showcasing the immortal Thunderbirds from 1967) Lady Penelope. Captain Scarlet. The Persuaders. The list goes on and on. Those strips were featured in a variety of comics and magazines, now [...]
Tank Girl returns to Brit comics soon, with original co-creator Alan C Martin being joined by Rufus Dayglo (what a brilliant name) for Skidmarks which will make its bow in the Judge Dredd Megazine issue #275. Which is good news, although as Steve Holland on Bear Alley notes, that same issue is also causing a bit of a storm on the 2000 AD forums because the 2000 AD Extreme, which is a reprint-only title, is stopping at issue #30 and [...]
The BBC has a video interview with Doctor Who supremo Russell T Davies discussing the difficulties of trying to keep some plot points secret ahead of a show’s transmission in the modern, multi-media digital age. (POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNER - if you haven’t seen the penultimate episode from last week you may want to avoid the next bit). We’ve all been following the (often totally made-up-by-tabloid-hacks) speculation over whether David Tennant will return or not as the Doctor, something which went into [...]
...for the overwhelmingly adorable sight of Kid Spock and Baby Scotty:The splash page for the issue is pretty good, too...it's supposed to represent the "de-aging" process the two characters endure in this story:...but it looks more like Spock and Scotty have invited their bratty lookalike kid nephews along for the adventure, like the 23rd century equivalents of Pipeye, Pupeye, Poopeye, and Peepeye. images from Star Trek #42 (Jan '77) - art by Alden McWilliams

To those in the USA: Happy 4th of July! To all my other friends: Happy Friday! Hopefully you have had a nice day!Today was a much better day. I got good news by phone. My grandma is feeling better, and was able to go back to her retirement home from the hospital. My mom and dad were able to go to the local parade, and to spend time with my sister and her family. That is great news.Jim and I slept [...]
The series concludes in this volume. I haven’t read book two, so I’m not sure how Shea wound up living in the mountains with a mysterious black-winged girl. Flock of Angels Book 3Buy this book Her people can fully retract their wings, unlike him. So even where he might fit in, he doesn’t, although most are nice enough to him. Still, there are a bunch of weird things about their society, things Shea finds wrong and disturbing. However, they risk dying [...]

Joe covered this on Thursday, but I just wanted to add my voice to it as well; Oliver Lambden of Tales From The Flat (see our review here) got in touch with news of the Tales From The Flat movie (or a 10 minute degree show film, whatever you prefer to call it): London Underground Comics MMU Degree Show Film. The film is a mashup of comic art / animation and documentary following Oliver and Lawrence of Tales From The Flat [...]
